Carthay Square / Carthay Circle Mid-Wilshire District of Los Angeles (Mid City)

Carthay

Carthay was designed to be a pedestrian oasis in a primarily car-based city. As such, it is famous for its broad sidewalks and abundant walkways, as well as many street-side shops and businesses. This makes Carthay ideal for those seeking to live a low-carbon emission lifestyle, since walking and cycling are much easier than in other neighborhoods. There is no train service to or through Carthay as of 2018; however, the city bus system has a number of stops and MTA is working on a purple line extension that will be done 2023 at the latest. At the center of Carthay is Carthay Circle, home to the Carthay Theater, a famous one-screen theater catering to classic and independent films. Carthay is also home to a number of traditional, older style homes which are listed for preservation by the Los Angeles historical society.

History of Carthay Circle

Established as an upper-class neighborhood in the 20s, subsequent development and expansion have made it decidedly middle class, although there is still an emphasis on single-family homes, which make up the vast majority of listings provided by Carthay real estate agents. Bordered by the Miracle Mile, Picfair Village, Beverly Hills, and the Fairfax District, it is very popular among young families and professionals who work in the entertainment industry and want to minimize their commute and/or hob-nob with the celebrities in neighboring areas.

Carthay Square Background

Originally a whites-only district due to racially restrictive covenants, Carthay has since expanded to be very racially inclusive. Most notably it is home to a substantial Ethiopian population which has developed into the nearby "Little Ethiopia," a hotspot for Ethiopian shops, restaurants, and cultural events. Carthay is also home to a significant Jewish population, as well as a number of synagogues and kosher shops which cater to both the Jewish community and the general population.
