Hacienda Heights Location
Located on a part of Rancho La Puente, a one-time Mexican land grant, Hacienda Heights real estate offers picturesque, affordable Southern California living to its 56,000 residents, 80 percent of whom are homeowners.
The community, which spans 11 square miles, is located south of the City of Industry, north and east of Whittier, and north of La Habra Heights. The Puente Hills that flank the community on the south, west, and partially on the east make this is a real estate jewel.
Hacienda Heights - Beginnings
The community history is one of the reasons to consider Hacienda Heights real estate listings. Settlers William Workman and John Rowland began developing the area in 1845. The Haas avocado, now the standard avocado internationally, was born in the Puente Hills that surround Hacienda Heights. Its fields of citrus crops, walnuts and avocados were purchased in 1926 as a real estate development and were quickly transformed into a real estate development. Its population grew rapidly and in 1961, the community adopted the name of Hacienda Heights. Residents voted three times, in 1982, 1992, and 2003 to remain an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County and not incorporate as a city.
The community is best known as the home of the Hsi Lai Temple; a 20-year-old religious complex is considered the largest Buddhist temple in the Western hemisphere. Ming Dynasty style architecture covers 15 acres, with more than 100,000 square feet of floor space.
Recreation
Residents keep active in this charming hillside community. For example, at Manzanita Park, there's an adult softball league, yoga classes, and programs for preschoolers. Mountain bikers revel in the highs and lows of the canyon trails that surround the area and have great views of the San Gabriel Valley. Seniors in Hacienda Heights stroll three mornings a week through the streets to stay fit.
Residents support the local farmer's market and Fourth of July events.
Hacienda Heights Schools
The community offers 11 public elementary schools, four public middle schools, and two public high schools. Many of these schools have scored high on the Academic Performance Index, a statewide comparative tool. Out of a possible 1,000, scores on the 2008 Academic Performance Index were 909 at Grazide Elementary School, 802 at Kwis Elementary School, 761 at Cedarlane Middle School, and 764 at Glen A. Wilson High School.
