Long Beach Homes

Long Beach is known by outsiders as one of the world's largest shipping ports, as California's fifth-largest city, and home to area aerospace industries. But owners of Long Beach homes are more inclined to think of their city as one filled with unique neighborhoods that all lie close to four miles of beaches that line the Pacific Ocean.

Owners of historic Long Beach homes, waterside mansions, and modest ranch homes join for community activities such as concerts by the city's own municipal band. Located 20 miles from Los Angeles, Long Beach real estate offers cooler temperatures than other areas because of its proximity to the ocean. Long Beach property listings are often chock full of bargains.

Long Beach CA Beginnings

Spanish explorers found the Tongva indigenous people in the area when they arrived in the 1600s. The Spanish Rancho Los Cerritos, Rancho Los Alamitos, and Rancho San Pedro were later developed by settlers who established cattle and sheep ranches and agricultural enterprises. In the mid-1800s, J.W. Bixby began the development of the Alamitos' oceanfront property near the city's picturesque bluffs. The town grew as a seaside resort in the early 1920s The Long Beach earthquake of 1933 damaged the city and surrounding areas.

In 1921, oil was discovered in Signal Hill. The area, which later became known as Long Beach field became the biggest producer in Southern California and is recognized as producing more oil per acre than anywhere else in the world. Manufacturing includes aircraft, automobile parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment, and home furnishings. It is also home to headquarters for corporations such as Epson America, Molina Healthcare, Scan Health Care, and Polar Air Cargo.

Long Beach Recreation & Amenities

Long Beach features one of the largest aquariums on the West Coast, the Aquarium of the Pacific. Every spring thousands of racing fans flock to Long Beach for the Grand Prix. The Queen Mary, a retired cruise ship for the Cunard Line features a museum, restaurant, and hotel. The Pike at Rainbow Harbor, includes P.F. Chang's restaurant, China Bistro, and Bubba Gump Shrimp company.

The city is also home to California State University Long Beach, which opened in 1949. Long Beach residents enjoy a three-mile bike and pedestrian path and beaches on the ocean and Alamitos Bay.

Naples Bayside Academy, an elementary school, scored 966 of a possible 1,000 points. Minnie Gant scored 940 and Lowell Elementary garnered 798 points.
