Mount Washington History
Mt. Washington was founded as a development in 1909 by famous land baron Robert Marsh. Centered around the Mt. Washington Hotel, the region was quickly recognized for its natural beauty and steep hills, which led to the development of a geared railroad. The railroad was removed in 1925 to make room for a modern roadway. Due to steep hills, the area was developed slowly and sparingly.

Mount Washington is still known as one of the last few refuges of natural wilderness, beauty and splendor within the San Fernando Valley.To take advantage of this, some of the residents have established large mansion estates preserving the wilderness for themselves, although many smaller single-family homes retain a lightly forested back yard. Washington is overwhelmingly single-home in nature, and many of the homes are built on hills so as to take in the excellent views of the surrounding countryside. It has featured in several songs by local artists, most notably "A Mount Washington Love Song" by Loch & Key.
Mt. Washington is commonly sought as a low-cost place to live by bohemians and young families. Despite the beautiful views and abundant nature, because it is somewhat inaccessible and distant from the downtown area, a number of houses in the $300,000 or less range are available. The quiet, nature-filled neighborhood is thus very popular with persons and families that want an escape from the typical urban environment and don't mind the commute. The large hills prevent any major thoroughfares from coming through the area, and the connection with the Metro Gold Line ensures that even persons without a car are able to get into the downtown area. Several freeways surround Mt. Washington and can be reached easily on the many minor streets running through the neighborhood.

Due to the extremely hilly nature of Mt. Washington, there are no major commercial or industrial areas. There are a few small markets and restaurants, but most of the residents do their shopping elsewhere. Most of the people who live in Mt. Washington commute to work, either by bus, train or car. There are several local schools, most notably Mt. Washington Elementary School, which ranks among the highest-rated elementary schools in Los Angeles. Mt. Washington is also home to the Southwest Museum, which primarily focuses on the art and history of the American Indian, although it also features some local and Spanish-American art. The steepest road in the United States, Eldred Street, is also located in Mt. Washington, with a 33% grade. Mt. Washington also has a vibrant spiritual community, and is home to the world headquarters of the Self-Realization Fellowship.
