Mid-Wilshire Homes
The Mid-Wilshire District offers residents the opportunity to be near it all: great restaurants, major employers, cultural landmarks, and spacious parks. Mid-Wilshire real estate is varied. Early 1920s Spanish-style homes and duplexes share blocks with Country English and Tudor styles.
Mid-Wilshire homes are located three miles west of Downtown LA, ten minutes south of Hollywood, and just five minutes east of Miracle Mile. Mid-Wilshire is bound by Wilton Place on the West, Hoover Street on the East, Third Street on the North, and Eighth Street on the South. The area is also known as Wilshire Center, Mid-Wilshire, or the Wilshire District.
The neighborhood includes Los Angeles landmarks such as the La Brea Tar Pits and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
Mid-Wilshire Beginnings
In the 1920s, developer A.W. Ross saw in an unpaved farm road a chance to rival downtown Los Angeles with a new commercial district and sought to draw business; and customers with amenities such as left-turn lanes and time traffic lights that would help motorists instead of pedestrians.
Large retailers including May Co. and Coulter’s soon arrived. Store facades were created so they could be seen well from cars passing by. The strip became tagged an American Champs-Élysées," While during the 1960s, the commercial vitality declined, the area has retained its high profile after the addition of several commercial high-rises, The Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, (LACMA) and La Brea Tar Pits museums.
Recreation & Amenities
The Wilshire District includes the Pan-Pacific Park, which includes an auditorium, barbecue pits, baseball, basketball courts, a children’s play area, an indoor gym, a Holocaust Memorial, and a jogging path. Hancock Park includes La Brea Tar Pits, the George C. Page Museum of La Brea Discoveries, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The museum offers outdoor jazz concerts in the summer months as well as other events throughout the year.
Schools
The Mid-Wilshire District is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Harvard Elementary School scored 836 of a possible 1,000 on the state’s Academic Performance Index.
