Monterey Park History

Originally a settlement of Shoshone Indians, the San Gabriel Valley also saw scores of Spaniard soldiers in the late 1700s. The area now known as Monterey Park, first received a separate identity in the mid-1800s when Alessandro Repetto purchased a large portion of land on which to build his home. Later, a US mail rider, Richard Garvey, began developing the area using water diverted from the nearby Hondo River. Monterey Park incorporated as a city in 1916 by a vote of 455 to 33. The roaring 1920s brought further development and a new wave of immigration. Asian immigrants to the area cultivated crops and flowers, founding nurseries in the area. Today, Monterey Park celebrates its diverse culture during its annual Harmony Festival.
