Norwalk History
In 1784, Manuel Nieto, a Spanish soldier, received a Spanish land grant, Rancho Los Nietos, that included Norwalk, once the home of the Shoshonean Native American Indian tribe. Nearly a century later, Atwood Sproul and brother, Gilbert Sproul bought what later became Norwalk on the condition a passenger stop on the railroad be built there. The station allowed potential Norwalk real estate buyers to visit the city with ease.
In the early 1900s, Norwalk was known as a dairy center as well as the home to the largest sugar beet farms in Southern California. Over time, these were replaced by more and more homes.
Recreation & Amenities
It's always celebration time in the city of Norwalk. There's the 16th of September Fair, a beauty contest and entertainment that commemorate Mexican Independence Day in September, the Halloween costume contest on the city hall lawn in October, and Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus on a sleigh in the neighborhoods in December. If there's no holiday to celebrate, seniors might head to the Norwalk Senior Center to play Wheel of Fortune or kids might try their hand at the bookmark contest at the Los Angeles County Public Library in the city.
Norwalk offers a variety of shopping and restaurants. The Norwalk Town Square features the Outback Steakhouse, Polly's Pies Restaurant, a Mexican eatery, and fast food. Ethnic eateries, such as the Peruvian Anticucheria Danesi, have received widespread acclaim. The city's own boxing ring, skatepark, nature center, and two historical museums make Norwalk real estate listings even more attractive.
